TheDenman Island Climate Action Network (DICAN) has kicked off Earth Week by painting the famous Denman Island Graffiti Fence, a colourful fixture of the island for over 50 years. A team of volunteer artists has decorated the fence with a message alerting everyone toEarth Week celebrations, with a full list at https://denmanislandclimateaction.ca/earthweek/#list
Events include webinars on “Planting and Protecting Trees for the Future;”“Retrofitting Homes;” and, “Zero Waste.”There will be a seminar on “Active Hope,” much needed in these times. Friday is film night featuring, “The Call of the Forest.” On Saturday, April 24, a sign-painting session at the Saturday Market will be followed by a parade to “downtown” Denman. Finally, the week will conclude with “The Good News about Eating Plants!” at the Island Pacifica Animal Sanctuary on Denman.
DICAN member, Heather McLean, acknowledges that we are confronted with the serious, and often bleak, challenge of the Climate Crisis. However, she notes, “A key aspect of DICAN’s Mission Statement is ‘hopeful and celebratory mutual support’. These Earth Week events illustrate that protecting the earth can be educational, fun and supportive.”
